bring traditional art into graphic design.
I am grateful for my upbringing in classical art. My high school offered extensive art classes where we studied traditional art and were encouraged to participate in mediums outside of our powerhouse. This continued as a common theme in my liberal arts college education at Whitworth University. In my time at Whitworth, I was required to take extensive drawing, painting, ceramics, and art history classes in addition to my graphic design courses.
This foundation of traditional art has heavily influenced my artistic process and passion. I create my best work when I am engaged in multiple fields of creativity. I love to fill my free time with anything from baking cakes to drawings with a linear perspective. These outside forms of art influence my creativity and productivity in graphic design and the digital realm.

The bakery
During covid I got my first full-time job in our local grocery stores bakery. Although I mostly worked the counter to begin, I started getting to decorate cakes eventually. Customers would come in and ask for names written on them and I enjoyed doodling on something as practical and loved as a cake. I eventually was promoted to a baker position, and there, my love for baking and cakes began. I love applying my art and creativity to a different canvas. Often when I am in a rut of no creativity I will bake a cake— it seems to solve everything.
Drawing 101
My love for graphic design started with pen and paper. As the years have gone by, I’ve realized the value in refining my hand in traditional drawing concepts. My University required me to take multiple levels of drawing and painting which I am now so grateful for. I find that clients value my hand drawn or written work and that it sets me apart from other artists. Outside the computer I can still communicate visually.
ceramics
I have always dreamed of taking ceramics and this year I was able to take ceramics two semesters back to back. This was one of the most creatively rewarding classes in my college career. I was able to apply my graphics onto the pieces I made and it opened up a whole new world of creativity and possiblity.
photography
I think one of the best ways to exercise creativity regularly is through your phone camera. We have more access than any humans ever before to capture inspiration and brilliant art instantly. I find so much inspirartion from my camera roll and photos I barely ermeber taking. Let architecture inspire your watercolor, let wed design inspire the coffee mug you throw in ceramics. Use your camera to capture and harness creativity and inspiration.
